History of our inspiration and mission
Mission and Vision
Converting local resources into value added products is the foundation for a locally based economy. In 2001, U.S. Senator James Jeffords led an effort to diversify Vermont’s economic base by seeking value added opportunities for its historically small but robust agricultural industry.
This effort sought to create jobs and improve infrastructure by building profitable, sustainable businesses connected to the agricultural strength of local economies. Vermont Natural Coatings represents the initial success of this vision. VNC has embraced this vision as an inspiration and foundation of its mission. The integrity, quality and safety of our products support our commitment and connection to the area and its residents.
History
Our mission is based on high quality premium products. This success began with a University of Vermont research team, spearheaded by the co-inventor of PolyWhey®, Dr. Mingruo Guo. Dr. Guo’s lab team created a premium wood coating that was tougher and safer than existing products, with recycled whey protein as the linchpin ingredient.
VNC was incorporated in 2004 to manufacture these whey-enhanced coatings that deliver professional performance without the toxic chemicals of other finishes.
The town of Hardwick, the heart of Vermont’s agricultural industry and home town of company founder, Andrew Meyer, was chosen as the place to make our products. We set our course to be a profitable, locally based and environmentally sustainable business.
Our growth from our first retail store in Greensboro, Vermont (pop. 770) to over 200 locations today came from building relationships with retailers, contractors, architects and homeowners by showing that they could give wood better protection while making the application and living conditions dramatically better.
From Original Floor and Furniture formulations, we have added Exterior, Exterior tints, non-toxic Wood Cleaner and PolyWhey Industrial Series. As we develop more products in 2012 we’ll continue to manufacture premium coatings by looking to our agricultural roots to seek better, cleaner, safer methods and materials.
